Coral Reef Monitoring

Reef Monitoring

An ideal way to study the health of the coral reefs and the short term impacts that tourism can have on it is through a number of reef monitoring methods.

ReefCheck is a global reef monitoring program designed to collect data from all the world's coral reefs, to process and determine the conditions of the reefs.

The PPDC also feels that by regularly monitoring the Phi Phi Island's reefs, we can gather data which may be able to protect the island's most valuable resources.

There are currently 3 permanent transects set-up locally (pdf site overview) (map):

Mosquito Island - SW
Ao Tonsai - W-wing inner
Ko Bida Nog - Central

PPDC also aim to survey all six of the Phi Phi Islands using a manta tow technique.

*indicator species are specific species whose absence or presence can let us form a standardised scientific picture of the coral reef health.
