The divers measured out areas of the substrate that consisted of mostly sand and marked them. Any life (mostly small branching coral) was carefully moved to one side and re-bedded if necessary.
With snorkelers in-water spotting, the barge made many passes, dropping the concrete blocks as directed.
Although it was time consuming the method proved a success. None of the pre-existing coral reef was damaged during the eight hour operation. All the blocks are clustered at an optimum depth between 15m and 12m. Some rearrangement will be necessary to ensure the site will be safe, and to make it more attractive.
Each block weighs one ton, and requires 5 lift bags to lift! (more)
